It’s time to “Make Orange Green!”
The University of Tennessee is making DI-namic efforts to make this year’s Global Finals more “green.”
We will actively promote our green activities each day in the Global Finals Daily News, and we’ll make a huge splash on GREEN FRIDAY.
Here are some ways you can pitch in and help us make Global Finals green:
- Please recycle your props.
1-800-GOTJUNK workers will be at the Knoxville Convention Center to sort the discarded props and will recycle or reuse as many items as possible.
In addition, we have expanded efforts at all other Competition sites to include cardboard recycling. When discarding props or prop shipment boxes, please break them down and place them in the clearly labeled cardboard recycling area next to the dumpster at each Challenge site.
- Please recycle your bottles, cans, and newspapers.
Bottle and can recycling containers will be located all over campus and in or outside all facilities being used. Please help us make DI green by placing bottles, cans, and discarded newspapers in the appropriate recycling containers.
- Please help us reduce exhaust pollutants in the air by parking your car and utilizing our shuttle system.
All Global Finals shuttle buses operating through Knoxville Area Transit will use bio-diesel B-20. There will also be one bus in the fleet (used for special needs) that operates on propane. Depending on the company, motorcoaches in use will be operating on low-sulfur fuels, practicing fuel-conservation methods, and utilizing burner cut-offs which also reduce exhaust pollutants.
- Please help us conserve water.
If you are staying in a hotel with options to reduce the number of times you have your linens changed or exchanged, please take advantage of that opportunity. Most hotels will have a card in the guest room providing guests with the information necessary to opt out of having sheets changed or towels exchanged every day. If you are in a UT residence hall, towel and linen exchange is available at the front desk, but please conserve whenever possible.
- Please help us conserve energy and electricity.
Many of our hospitality partners (hotels, meeting facilities, etc.) make daily efforts to reduce energy and electricity consumption by cutting off lights and appliances whenever possible. Please make an effort to turn off the lights, TVs, and any other appliances in your sleeping rooms when you leave for the day.
- The Knoxville Convention Center has instituted some additional “greening” practices.
You’ll notice automated paper towel and soap dispensers and recycled toilet paper and paper towels in the restrooms, expanded recycling efforts to include aluminum, glass, plastic, and mixed paper, as well as window tinting in the concourses to reduce the indoor temperature and need for air conditioning.
UT Conferences especially thanks its partners with the “Make Orange Green” campaign … UT Dining Services/ARAMARK, and UT Facilities Services … for their help at Global Finals.
Your blog is interesting!
Keep up the good work!
